Groove Nation 2014: Musicology!

MUSICOLOGY (n.) \ˌmyü-zi-ˈkä-lə-jē\
the study of music as a branch of knowledge or field of research as distinct from composition or performance

I guess most of you know dancing takes up a huge part of my life and if you ask me, dance was my pretty much my summer. If you remember one of my posts from last year, where I had my dance recital. This year, once again, I’ve taken part in those eight weeks of intensive hiphop and contemporary dance classes under the coaches of Groove Central! Having spent the past two months with such talented dancers, the recital, GC 2014: Musicology held at the AFP theater last May 24 was the highlight (and sadly, the end) of it all! This year’s theme featured songs from Top 10 Music Videos, Music Festivals and Grammy Award winning artists! Just like last recital, various genres and styles of dance were performed from contemporary to krump, from feel good or laid back to girly! Along with the theme, each class featured an artist that would match their style of dance. I, luckily, was able to get down with Britney as I performed with DTour and be fierce to the sounds of Katy Perry with contemporary since I grew up listening to those artists and I really can relate to their genres.

Contemporary dance is actually one of the styles that I am most comfortable doing but this year’s class had really been one big challenge taken to a whole new level (Thanks to coach Mitchi). Compared to the previous year, this summer’s class had focused more on power and sharpness and strength (which included more conditioning) – contrary to the other side of the contemporary that we’re more used to seeing. Our coach really helped us with flexibility and strength and not to mention her choreography always brings the house down! I guess I can say I really grew from that experience and learned more about myself and what I can actually do as a dancer especially that the class made me push my limit and break them walls!

On the other hand, classes with DTour under coach Arda is always a challenge. I, honestly, am not yet used to the style and the feel even if it’s my second year but I am slowly getting there. Every year though, the choreography and dance pieces coach brings to the table are always pure genius. Timing, choreography, elements, musicality – it’s the whole package! Dtour’s style is mostly girly and powerful and I’m really thankful for coach that she was able to bring out more of that from us which really helped us get better as dancers!

Considering that at the beginning of this summer, I actually sprained my knee on the first week, bouncing back and regaining my strength had been something that I couldn’t have imagined at the time of my injury. It was rather difficult but thanks to my coaches (well, also the doctors of course) and to my dance-mates, I got my knee ready after a month just in time for the more intensive part of the summer.

I’m extremely grateful to have spent another year with the sweetest, kindest, most talented dancers. Not only did we learn from our teachers/coaches but we learned from each other as well. If it’s one thing I’ve learned as a dancer, we just never stop learning and growing because the passion that drives us to do what we love most is one of the ways for us to improve.

This whole GC experience had been extremely worth it, not only with dancing with my teammates and new found friends but as well as seeing others share in the same passion and actually enjoying the time with them! I guess I can say that all the performances I had watched added to my everyday learnings and I honestly can’t wait for more of these experiences to come! For me, the ambiance at recitals always makes me feel like I belong and it's like all my stress and worries (well, except stage friend and costume malfunctions) go away because I was able to experience being in the midst of everyone who also is there to do what they love and support each other in it and that is the DANCE!
